The Ukiah Air Attack Base was established in 1958 and is located at the Ukiah Airport in the CDF Mendocino Unit.
Ukiah responds to an average of 160 calls per year. Staff at the base consists of one battalion chief, one fire captain, two fire apparatus engineers, and five firefighters. The complement of aircraft located at Ukiah includes one OV-10 Bronco and two S-2T airtankers.
On average, the base pumps about 200,000 gallons of retardant a year. With the base’s pumps, three loading pits and equipment, Ukiah has a possible peak output of 80,000 gallons of retardant each day.
The base’s direct protection area encompasses over three million acres and covers Mendocino County, the north half of Lake County, parts of Trinity and Glenn Counties and a small portion of Sonoma County.
